Ghost Hunting Equipment and its Uses

by: the Haunted NC/Seven team

Our equipment is privately owned, with each investigator having and using there own preference in items. But the base of Haunted North Carolina is research, so we make sure we have as much available a possible and being prepared means bringing extras of everything in case something quits working. Our equipment includes the following (although it's not limited to it!)...We have included some photos and descriptions/uses for some items to help answer questions we often get about what we use.

Photo of a 8mm Infrared Video David's video camera set up is a Sony Digital8 Handycam with LCD screen and night vision.  At night he uses an infrared light (also Sony) that allows filming in total darkness with a 100 foot range with a controllable light volume. Hint: want to keep your batteries going as long as possible? Don't use the LCD screen while filming.
Photo of a VHS C video Camera David also uses a Sony digital camera that features a 6x precision digital zoom. This model can record directly onto a floppy disk or onto a memory stick.
Photo of a tape recorder and headphones used in EVP recording One of our audio recording setups.  A simple GE full size recorder utilizing an external microphone, high quality music grade tapes and for listening back, a set of "cover the entire ears" earphones.  We use several full size recorders on any given investigation.
Photo of a magnetic Compass A field compass.  Frequently changes in the magnetic field occur in conjunction with anomalies or paranormal experiences.  While we use several EMF detectors, a simple compass will also alert us to changes by fluctuating from magnetic north... as much as 30 degrees or more. And it doesn't require batteries.  This one has glow in the dark markers making it easy to see in the pitch dark.
TriField Natural EM Meter. This is considered to be one of the best EMF detectors out there. The Trifield Natural is designed to ignore AC electro magnetic fields such as power lines and appliances.
Photo of an ELFZone EMF detector This is probably the least expensive EMF detector out there and very simple to use.  The 3 LED lights measure certain ranges of Electromagnetic Field emissions.  The Safe is below 2.5 milligauss, the caution is 2.5 to 7 Milligauss and of course, the Danger is higher.  The widely accepted idea is that the 2-7 milligauss range is a signifier of paranormal activity, however we can find no data to back this up.  What we do find is that fluctuations often accompany paranormal activity.  An important use we have with this tool is the ability to walk through a location and check baseline readings that have revealed electrical wiring, coaxial cables, etc. and we can then note these things and keep them from being mistaken in our reports and findings. If you plan to use one you might consider using a better quality one as this has only limited use.
AlphaLab's Air Ion Counter. Reads both positive and negative ions in the air. Fluctuations in these ion readings have been linked to paranormal activity.
Photo of a personal size IR motion detector Simply motion detector with both sound and light warnings.  Sometimes we do use these to secure a location against accidental or intentional entry from live people.  And sometimes also set up with the possibility an unseen entity could trigger the infrared beam.
Photo of a pair of 2 way radios 2 of our multiple two way radios.  No matter how we split up or work, everyone is ALWAYS in radio contact with each other.  The radios we use are pretty powerful with long range and have been tested in everything from battlefields to private homes. Headsets allow us to remain in communication while keeping our hands free for other work.
Photo of an SLR 35 mm camera with flash A SLR 35 mm camera.  This is a Nikon F28 that has proven itself time and again as reliable and good quality.  Everything on this one is entirely manual - from F/stops to focusing - requiring a thorough working knowledge of it to get the best results.

This is the CellSensor AC EMF detector use by Jim. Using both audio and visual alerts, it's hard to miss it when it picks up something.
